Notorious for his extended mixes and flawless ear, DJ Rootz - aka Tim Bowers - is Boulder, Colorados ultimate underground DJ. Handpicking selections from every end of the musical spectrum, DJ Rootz rocks dance floors with an immaculate selection of tracks including foundational funk and soul break-beats, electronica, reggae, underground, new, and old school hiphop, and even disco and house.
After creating more than a dozen funky reggae and hip-hop mixes to much praise, in 2005 Rootz picked up an MPC 4000 and began producing. His first album, Muzic iz Bezt, features all original productions and transcends genre and demographic. It is currently available on CD as well as vinyl EP at music stores around the country. The bold combinations he originates are unmatched. Rootz' fabulous fresh funk is instantly etched into one's mind. His seamless blending skills and inimitable ear for selection have since propelled him into a class of his own, as not only a live DJ but also as an acclaimed producer. While he cannot be compared, his album conjures thoughts of old school Pete Rock, RJD2, mixing by Scientist and spinning by Mr. Scruff, Spankrock, and DJ AMthen, throw in some of ZTrip's energy to induce the ever-present positive vibe.
Growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, DJ Rootz listened to and was inspired by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa and John Coltrane. At age eleven, he picked up his first guitar and formed a band and he has been actively engaged in music ever since. Pursuing his fascination with vinyl and ultimately taking it to the next level, Rootz began DJing in 2001. Because of his ever-evolving, atypical influences and his diverse musical awareness, Rootz' ear is distinctive. His wide range of musical experience allows him to seamlessly blend Gwen Stefani with Queen, The Talking Heads with Michael Jackson, and the Beastie Boys with Madonna, among countless others.
Tripping around the country is not new for DJ Rootz. Las Vegas, New York City, Denver, and every ski town on the Front Range have already experienced DJ Rootz shows, and he has rocked the decks at music festivals in Pennsylvania and New York. Rootz has shared the stage with a plethora of talented artists including Lyrics Born, The Roots, The New Deal, Prefuse 73, John Scofield, Steve Kimock, Super Diamond, Little Brother, STS9, members of The String Cheese Incident, Israel Vibrations, Aceyalone, DJ Greyboy, The Greyboy Allstars, and The Meters, among others.
With his first self-produced album and a growing request for his innovative mix tapes under his belt, DJ Rootz is one of the most sought after DJs in the Rockies and beyond. In addition to multiple weekly residencies and guest appearances throughout Colorados Front Range, Rootz is now helping make Ropeadopes Baby Loves Disco www.babylovesdisco.com (an East Coast staple), a huge hit in Boulder. Also, besides regular shows on Radio 1190 and 88.5 KGNU, DJ Rootz is one of the house DJ's at Boulders famous Fox Theatre, where he plays often.
