Bio
Soul jazz organist Robert Walter built a reputation as one of America’s heaviest jazz-funk crossover musicians. He earned international acclaim for his work with the Greyboy Allstars, who were credited with bringing the 60s/70s soul jazz sound to a modern jamband audience. Robert Walter toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe for the past 15 years with the Greyboy Allstars and his own ensemble 20th Congress.
Joining Walter on tour (and his latest release, 'Cure All') are Johnny Vidacovich and bassist James Singleton. Vidacovich is an elder statesman in New Orleans. He taught many of the local drummers and has been a fixture of the music scene there all his life. James Singleton has an intimate and extensive affiliation with the New Orleans music scene and a member of Astral Project, a fixture there since 1978.
“Robert Walter plays the Hammond organ the way it was meant to be played —bold and free-swinging. …these guys are locked in a three-way conversation that is almost always loud, colorful and illuminating.”
—Wayne Robins, Billboard
“Hammond-organ maven and jam-band icon Robert Walter joins the longstanding New Orleans rhythm tandem of upright bassist Jim Singleton and drummer Johnny Vidacovich—charter members of Astral Project, for a slamming, groove-heavy throwdown that pays tribute to the influences of the Meters, Professor Longhair, Thelonious Monk and Jimmy Smith as it celebrates the spirit of dance.” —Bill Milkowski, Jazztimes
“The album is Walter’s best recorded showcase in New Orleans to date, finding enough common ground with the city’s keyboard traditions to make sense here, but distinctive enough to assert his own personality.”
—Alex Rawls, Offbeat Magazine
